A New Kind of Exercise
Videl whistled happily as she made her way down the empty halls of the
Capsule Corporation's training dome, carrying her duffel bag full of
equipment over her shoulder. It had been a while since she had last
come here, and yet even then, the place still had the same look and
smell to it. This was the same place where Goku and Vegeta had
trained, as well as her husband Gohan and the other Z fighters. At
times it would seem that Vegeta lived in this place, constantly
training non-stop under tremendous amounts of gravity in order to
surpass Goku's strength. Yet ever since the defeat of Majin Buu, the
building had become desolate, only serving as an occasional workout
spot for weaker fighters such as herself. Yet it was not just any type
of exercise that Videl had in mind for today. Today she would start
training for the upcoming Budokai, the most prestigious of martial arts
tournaments ever. The tournament was only a few weeks away, leaving
Videl with a rather short time to train. She knew that she would have
some tough competition, seeing as how Trunks and Goten were also
entering, and while she knew she wouldn't win, she at least wanted to
score high enough to win a worthy consolation prize as well as show off
her potential. She had learned that this facility offered a Budokai
training course, so naturally she borrowed a key card from Bulma and
hurried over here to try her luck.
*I hope this program doesn't suck,* she thought to herself as she made
her way down the long corridor, the sounds of her footsteps echoing off
the walls. *It better at least give me a challenge.* She would have
rather trained with someone else, an actual human that could spar with
her to test her limits. Unfortunately, everyone she knew was either
too busy or un-willing to help, so she had to settle for this battle
program instead.
Soon enough, she reached the end of the long hallway, coming face to
face with a rather large metal door. Taking the key card from her
pocket, she slid it through the card acceptor, smiling as she watched
the door slide open and reveal the arena to her. Searching the walls
for a light switch, she found one easily and flipped it on, immediately
illuminating the large, circular room for her eyes. Videl was
surprised to see that the room was pretty much empty, save for a wall
panel on the opposite side. Figuring that it had something to do with
the operation of the arena, she walked over to it and examined it.
Sure enough, it had an intercom to speak into, as well as several
pre-programmed buttons to operate the room's many features.
"Let's see..." said Videl, looking the console over for anything that
might be interesting. "Let's start out with some weight training."
She reached out and pushed the button labeled 'WEIGHTS', and instantly
a section of floor located in one corner of the room lifted up,
producing a hidden weight bench along with several weights and bars of
different sizes. Impressed by the convenience of the console system,
she at once got to work, walking over to the set-up and taking a
dumbbell in each hand. After several curls, she felt like she had done
enough weight training, and set the dumbbells down, flexing her thin,
yet surprisingly powerful arms. Walking back over to the console, she
pressed the 'WEIGHTS' button again, and the set-up instantly returned
to it's original spot underground. She tried out every one of the
options, ranging from a treadmill to a cross country ski machine to a

she had had enough of a warm-up, she decided that now was as good a
time as ever to try out the Budokai simulator, which was the real
reason why she came out here in the first place. Doing a few
pre-emptive stretches to get herself ready, she took a sip of water
from her bottle and wiped the sweat off her brow. When she was done
relaxing, she walked over to the console and pressed the intercom
button.
"Computer, load Budokai simulation program," she demanded.
"AFFIRMATIVE," replied the computer. "TENKAGACHI BUDOKAI BATTLE
SIMULATION PROGRAM ACTIVATED. COMMENCING OPERATIONS. PLEASE STAND
BY."
Almost immediately, a large, circular section of the floor in the
middle of the room lifted up, taking the shape of a real Budokai
arena. At the other side of the room, the wall opened up, revealing
her opponent, a large fighting robot.
"This is what I'm fighting?" said Videl. "They got me fighting this
goofy thing? HA!! This is gonna be easier than I thought!!"
The two combatants made their way to the circle, stepping up on the
pedestal as they prepared for the battle to commence. After giving
each other the proper bows, they both took their fighting stances,
waiting patiently for the signal to start fighting. As soon the gong
rang, the cyborg dashed at her at full speed, displaying it's intent of
getting her out of the circle. Videl smiled as it made it's way
towards her, clenching her fists tight as she prepared herself for a
fierce battle. When it got within ten feet of her, the machine lunged
at her, releasing a flurry of punches and kicks that could have easily
taken down a normal human being. However, Videl was stronger than the
average girl, and while the robot was fast, she was faster. She easily
dodged every one of the android's attacks, sending out a quick jab
every once in a while to stun the machine. When she felt the time was
right, she grabbed the machine's arm in midswing, delivering a hard
knee to the stomach before tossing it out of the circle into the wall
of the arena. The machine hit the wall with the force of a Mack truck,
causing it to explode into pieces as it's wreckage fell to the floor,
it's circuits still buzzing and popping with electricity. Immediately,
a group of cleaning machines were dispatched to clean up the mess,
picking up the remnants of the robot and carrying them off to the
disposal area.
"HAHA!!," laughed the victorious Videl, her arms crossed and her face
smiling. "You'll have to do better than that to beat me!! Who's
next?"
A sound from behind her brought her out of her boastful attitude as she
heard what seemed like one person clapping, giving her applause over
her victory. "Well done," she heard a feminine voice say. "That was
most impressive."
Videl turned around to see another woman, dressed in a short skirt and
a jacket, under which she wore a white undershirt. She was a very

"The same thing you are here for, hon. I came to train for the Budokai
also."
"You're entering too?" asked a semi-surprised Videl. She was almost
positive that she was going to be the only female this year, but
apparently that was not to be so.
"I was planning on it, but after seeing you demolish that droid that
fast, now I'm not so sure."
"Heh, that's right!! I bet you're scared you'll have to fight me," she
mused.
"No, actually I think that the program is a bit too easy to train
under, seeing as how someone like you beat it so easily."
"HEY!!" retorted an insulted Videl. "You think that was easy?!"
"If you beat it, honey, then I know it was," replied 18.
"Why you!!!" growled Videl as she took offense to her friend's remark.
"How dare you insult my skill!! I bet I could take you any day!!"
Videl really didn't know what she was getting herself into, seeing as
how she knew good and well that in reality she wouldn't stand a chance
against the other woman.
"Are you saying that you want to fight?"
"Hell yes!!" shouted an overconfident Videl. "Bring it on!!"
"Hmmm. If you insist," replied the ever calm 18 as she removed her
jacket and shoes, doing a few stretches before stepping up onto the
pedestal. While she was certain that she would take Videl rather
easily, she knew that it wasn't smart to underestimate her, seeing as
how she was taught to fight by a Saiya-jin.
The two bowed respectively to each other, and then got ready to fight.
Videl immediately got into her fighting stance, whereas 18 merely
crossed her arms and smirked wickedly. Videl really didn't like how
she was so full of herself, and promised herself to wipe that smirk off
her friend's face.
The gong rang, and all hell broke lose. Instantly Videl was over at
18, releasing a flurry of attacks as she tried to make just one hit

crossed the whole time, as if to make a complete fool of the other

"Is that all you got?" called out 18. "I highly doubt you'll even get
past the first opponent like that."

sparring partner, trying her hardest to actually hit her. She moved so
fast that Videl couldn't even see her move, giving it the eerie
appearance as if her fists were passing right through her. She knew
that the odds were against her, but she couldn't lose this fight
without hitting her at least once. Winding up for a big punch, she
screamed out a shrill battle cry as she swung with all her might
straight at her opponent's face. She didn't expect to hit her, but she
really didn't expect to feel her hand take hold of her arm. Instantly,

to give in to you that easily!!"
"Of course I won't. Just don't expect me to go easy on you."
"Alright," agreed Videl. "Come on!!"
In an instant she was back on the offensive, this time putting her all
into the battle. 18 was surprised to actually see an improvement in
her fighting, and was forced to block some of her attacks, even though
none of them ever hit her directly. Eventually, it got to the point
where 18 had to block every one of her attacks, some of them so strong
they forced her back. Videl saw an opportunity show up, and kicked 18
hard in the shin. The blonde-haired girl got caught off guard by the

like me. The harder your opponent is, the better you become. Besides,
you almost beat me. Maybe you'll get lucky next time."
"Yeah, maybe I will. Thanks 18. It was fun." Her mood seemed to pick
up rather quickly, and she smiled at her friend, who happily smiled
back. She hoped that maybe they could spar again sometime, instead of
using that lame battle program.
"So what are you going to do now?" asked 18.
"Whew... Right now, I think I'm gonna go try to relax in the steam
room. My muscles are kinda sore. I think that the steam will help
ease the tension. Why don't you join me?"
"Sounds like fun, but maybe in a few minutes. I wanna do some
