2. A new day

Sailor Mars woke up early in the next morning in an awkward position: she had slept sitting, her head resting on the back of the couch as Sailor Venus' head was still resting on her lap. Sailor Mars' neck and back hurt as she manoeuvred herself under Sailor Venus' head and put a pillow gently in her place. Sailor Venus just stirred a bit when she moved but didn't wake up. Sailor Mars sighed in relief and left the room silently to fetch breakfast for Sailor Venus and for herself as well.

Sailor Mars thought about what she had heard last night, Sailor Venus being in love with the princess and all that. Why she couldn't be in love with Sailor Mars? She would have returned Sailor Venus' love more than willingly. It had hurt her to hear she loved someone else, but she had suppressed those feelings, as she had had to help Sailor Venus in her sorrow. Only good thing in the whole mess was that Minako had admitted she liked girls, so maybe Sailor Mars had a chance with her, if she could somehow persuade Sailor Venus' broken heart to take a chance with her. Sailor Mars was almost certain that Minako wouldn't remember her last night's love confession since she had been so drunk. Sailor Mars kept thinking ways to express her love for Sailor Venus. She didn't want to throw it at her face after what had happened with princess Serenity. She wanted to act delicately and give Sailor Venus as much time as she needed to get over it and open her heart again.

Sailor Mars walked in to the Moon Kingdom Palace's kitchen and gathered different food and drinks for Sailor Venus and herself. Once done, she headed back to Sailor Venus' room. As Sailor Mars entered she noticed Sailor Venus was still sleeping. Sailor Mars stopped for a moment to watch Sailor Venus who looked so innocent while sleeping, her golden hair cascading on the pillow and down her shoulders. How easy it had been to break her heart and not even knowing about it. Though Sailor Venus seemed to be tough and determined leader, she was very delicate and gave herself fully when she set her mind onto something. And how trusting she was towards people she knew and trusted, she left herself defenceless and vulnerable. It would have been easy for Sailor Mars to take advantage of her last night if she had wanted, but she would never do anything to hurt Minako. Never. She wanted her to be happy, even if it meant that Sailor Mars had to do the suffering.

She wouldn't approach Sailor Venus if it seemed she was still suffering from her broken heart, but Sailor Mars still wanted to show her feelings somehow. She put the breakfast she had fetched on the dining table and arranged it beautifully. Then Sailor Mars took out a pen and a piece of paper and left a note for Sailor Venus, since she couldn't stay and wait for her to wake up. They had a meeting with other Inners, Sailor Mercury and Sailor Jupiter, every morning. Since their leader was unable to go this time, the vice leader Sailor Mars had to go and explain that Sailor Venus had gotten sick or something like that.

Once Sailor Mars was done with the note, she scribbled her name on the bottom of the note. When she left the note on the table next to the food tray it hit her, the perfect way to approach Sailor Venus without pressing or scaring her. In the same time she could see how Sailor Venus reacted to her efforts without revealing her true identity. Sailor Mars smiled a bit and walked over to Sailor Venus, who was still sleeping. She suppressed the need to kiss her on the lips and kissed her forehead instead.

''I hope you notice me someday, Mina-chan. I'm not so bad of a choice, or at least I like to think so. And I love you so much that the every second spent without you hurts like thousand swords through my heart, but I will handle it.. if it is your will.'' Sailor Mars whispered before she left Sailor Venus' room and headed for the meeting.

---

Few hours after Sailor Mars had left, Sailor Venus woke up with an awful headache. Slowly she opened her eyes and flinched as bright light dazzled her eyes. She rose to sit even slower and held her head with both hands, it didn't ease the headache at all. She looked around in her living room, but didn't see Sailor Mars anywhere. 'Oh god! No wonder she left me! I'm so pathetic..' Sailor Venus thought and looked down her wrinkled clothes and her messy appearance, but then she noticed a food tray and a note on the table. Sailor Venus stood up with shaky legs but suddenly a wave of sickness hit her and she hurried to the bathroom and puked into the toilet once again. Sailor Venus rinsed out her mouth with water and finally took a sip. Once done, she walked back to the living room and to the dining table to read the note. Once finished reading, a tired little smile appeared on her face. How could she even think that Rei had simply left her? She had just taken care of her once again since it would have been absolutely inappropriate not to show up in their meeting without informing about it.

Sailor Venus looked gratefully the breakfast on the table and decided to dig in. It soon turned out that she couldn't eat as much as she would have wanted, since she still felt sick in both her head and her stomach. Sailor Venus decided to leave the rest of the breakfast to be and just drank the orange juice. Sailor Venus stood up and walked back to the couch and sat down. She thought about yesterday: how princess Serenity had crushed her heart not even knowing about it and how Sailor Mars had (for Sailor Venus' surprise) been understanding and had tried to comfort her. Sailor Venus had been so blinded by the princes she had dated and recently by princess Serenity that she hadn't noticed that side of Rei before. She had only seen the fierce and solemn vice leader, Sailor Mars. However, last night she didn't know what she would have done if Sailor Mars hadn't come and comforted her. Made her feel a bit better.

''Did she really say that she loves me?'' Sailor Venus whispered, not remembering last night clearly.

All that had happened felt like a dream and Sailor Venus wasn't sure which part was true and which was her own imagination. She couldn't remember everything that Sailor Mars had said but she remembered how good she had felt afterwards. Not until then she truly realised that she had revealed her most deeply hidden secret to Sailor Mars. 'Oh my god, she knows! What I'm gonna do? Damn, me and my big mouth..but I believe she won't tell anyone.. and she actually wasn't bothered by it at all..' Sailor Venus thought and calmed down a bit.

She really hadn't been a good leader since yesterday, so Sailor Venus decided it was time to pull herself together. Sailor Venus stood up and decided to go to that meeting after all, but as soon as she got up an awful wave of headache hit her and she let herself fall back on the couch. She decided to rest for a while, clean up and take a walk in the garden maybe she would feel better after that. Sailor Venus closed her eyes and swore in her mind not to drink that much ever again.

---

Sailor Mars walked grinning smugly to her room. The meeting had been brief since their actual leader had been absent and there was nothing new to discuss about. Sailor Mars was grinning because she had finally come up with the best way to win Minako's heart without hurting her in any way. Sailor Mars opened the door leading to her room and walked directly to her desk and took out a pile of paper and a pen. She started to write with a thoughtful look on her face. An hour and a pile of torn up papers later, Sailor Mars was quite satisfied and she decided that would do; she wasn't literally talented but not totally hopeless either. Now there was only one thing missing and Sailor Mars knew exactly where to find it.

Sailor Mars sneaked out of her room because it was located in the same corridor as Sailor Venus' room. She walked briskly to the royal garden of the Moon Kingdom, but stopped dead on her tracks as she spotted Sailor Mercury wandering in the garden, still wearing her uniform. Sailor Mars sighed in relief as she saw Sailor Mercury disappearing down the path leading to the deeper parts of the garden. That relief, however, was only temporarily as she saw Sailor Jupiter coming from the same path that Mercury had. Luckily she seemed to follow Mercury down the path deeper to the garden. Sailor Mars wondered for a brief moment what those two were doing together there, since their families (therefore planets too) practically hated each other's guts. They hadn't seemed to be friends even after their duty together as bodyguards had started. Sailor Mars shook her head, pushed those thoughts aside and continued her mission.

Finally she found what she was looking for and readied herself to leave, but then she spotted Sailor Venus who was walking absent-mindedly down the path leading to the garden. 'Dammit, why everyone has decided this is a good day for a stroll in the garden?!' she thought anxiously, not wanting to get caught especially by Sailor Venus. Sailor Mars stood behind some royal bushes as Sailor Venus walked past her, a sad expression painting her otherwise beautiful face. Sailor Mars' heart hurt as she saw that Minako was still suffering.

''I will bring smile on those lips again, I swear.'' Sailor Mars muttered in the bushes as she saw Sailor Venus disappearing in the left side of the garden.

Sailor Mars crept out of the royal bushes and left the royal garden to make her plan reality. It would be perfect timing since she had just seen Sailor Venus in the garden; it meant no one would be in her room right now.

---

Sailor Venus had been wandering in the garden for a while and finally decided to head back. Just when she was approaching the garden gates she started to feel really sick again. Quickly she ran behind some royal bushes and puked. 'Good god! I really hope that was the last time.' she thought as she wiped the cold sweat from her forehead. Sailor Venus sneaked out of the garden imperceptibly and walked then casually back to her room, hoping she wouldn't meet princess Serenity in the way.

Once safely back in her room she sighed in relief. Her mood wasn't any better after the walk and still all kinds of thoughts kept running through her head. She wanted again to forget all her worries and her broken heart but this time she wouldn't be as stupid as she had been last night. One time of that was certainly more than enough. She had hoped the walk would clear her mind and give some ideas how to get over princess Serenity sooner but it hadn't help at all. Maybe she could visit Sailor Mars later on, but on the other hand she wouldn't want to burden her anymore than she already had.

Sailor Venus took off her uniform coat and threw it on the couch. She decided to get something to drink but stopped as she saw a pink rose on her desk. Sailor Venus walked closer to the desk and noticed that there was also a note under the rose. Slowly she picked the rose up and opened the note with her other hand. Sailor Venus couldn't believe her eyes as she read the note:

''The beauty of this rose cannot even compare to yours..
Still my love for you blooms as strongly as this flower..
But my love lasts longer..

Forever yours,

a dreamer in the shadows''

Sailor Venus kept staring the note in disbelief. After recovering from the shock, she brought the rose under her nose and inhaled deeply. The scent was delicate and wonderful, many times better than the scent of old alcohol on Sailor Venus' clothes and in her mouth that morning. But what was more important than the scent was the fact that she had a secret admirer. Someone actually claimed to love her, Sailor Venus had thought that to be impossible.

Sailor Venus wondered who it could be: she was almost certain it was no prince, since the handwriting looked so feminine. That thought made her even happier. 'Maybe it is one of the maids around here. They always giggle and act like a bunch of lovesick teenage girls around the princess' bodyguards, though none of them have ever before approach me or the others in this way.', Sailor Venus continued her thinking, 'Or could it be Rei? Did she really confess her love to me or was it just a dream? Argh! I cannot ask her, I've been so much trouble to her already.. what would she think if I would go and ask a thing like that.. especially if it wasn't even true? No, I will find this out on my own.' Sailor Venus thought with a determination she had lacked since yesterday. This was just the right kind of job for the senshi of love, what made it even better was the fact it involved her not someone else.

First time after yesterday's sorrow, a genuinely happy smile painted Sailor Venus' face as she put the rose in a vase. Sailor Venus kept smiling brightly as she walked to her balcony and gazed the night sky. A gentle, yet cool, breeze caressed her face and long hair, making Sailor Venus forget her broken heart for a moment.
