Chapter 9

Title: Retirement Contribution

Elisa was shaking hands with the young ADA, Adam Braxton, outside the courtroom. He had been assigned to work her Vice cases.

A few of the men arrested, in the sting, were claiming entrapment. Elisa had been asked to testify. When the men saw her in court the decided to accept plea deals.

Elisa gently pulled her hand out of the ADA's grasp.

"I was wondering Detective Maza if you were seeing anyone?" She could hear the nervousness in his voice. She smiled attempting to let him down easy.

"I'm in between relationships right now." Images of Goliath and Fox flashed through her mind. It had been three weeks since she'd last seen Fox and even longer for Goliath.

She'd had little time to reflect on her brief affair with Fox. Elisa and Matt had been taken off Vice. They were now working with the Special Victims Unit also known as SVU.

Two more Jane Doe's had been identified as prostitutes and other's were now being reported missing.

NYPD had finally admitted there was a serial killer on the loose. All available officers had been assigned to the task force.

With all that was going on in her life there was no room for any romantic entanglements.

She was stopped from commenting when they were interrupted. "Detective Elisa Maza?" Elisa turned to find a bike messenger behind her.

His bright yellow helmet was tucked under an arm. "Yes, I'm Elisa Maza." She watched as he pulled a clip board and letter size envelope from his back pack.

"I have a special delivery for you Detective. Could you sign here please." He handed her the clip board. He looked a little uncertain as he asked her. "Can I see some ID detective?"

She rolled her eyes but flipped out her ID making sure her gold shield was visible.

He smiled sheepishly at her as he handed over the envelope. "Thanks ma'am, have a good day." The messenger disappeared just as quickly as he'd appeared.

Elisa unsealed the envelope and pulled out it's contents.

Her eyes widened as she looked at what was inside.

She counted then recounted the zeros just to be sure. Her brain finally registered the cheque in her hands was for one million dollars.

In the signature field was the name Fox Xanatos written in flowing script.

There was a note attached. 'My contribution to your retirement fund.' Elisa felt as if she'd been slapped.

Apparently their night together had meant nothing to the red head. To her it was just another business deal.

She heard her name being called but it sounded far away. "Detective Maza!" She jerked herself back to the present to see Adam looking at her concerned. "Are you ok Detective? You went a little pale."

The tips of her fingers were going numb from gripping the cheque.

Adam tried to see what she was looking at but she stuffed it back into the envelope.

"I'm sorry but I have to go." She started moving before he had a chance to respond.

She couldn't believe the nerve of that arrogant, rich bitch! The rapid click of her high heels on the marble floor echoed across the courthouse. She pulled out her cell phone dialing the number to the Eyrie building.

When Owen, the Xanatos's majordomo, answered she quickly cut him off.

"Put Fox on the phone. NOW!" Elisa demanded. Owen paused at the sound of her harsh tone. "Detective Maza?" He asked. She ground out through clinched teeth. "Yes." There was another pause on his end. "Mrs Xanatos is in a business meeting Detective."

It was her turn to pause as she waited for him to continue. When he didn't she asked. "Where is she Owen?

He cleared his throat. "She's at Nightstone Unl.." Elisa disconnected the call before he could finish.

She considered turning on the sirens of her unmarked police car, to clear traffic, but decided against it.

She gripped the steering wheel tight in her hands as she sped towards NightStone Unlimited.
