Chapter 25

Title: New Years

Samus hadn’t celebrated human holidays for her entire life, she hadn’t lived with humans in her childhood and the Chozo didn’t really have holidays. It wasn’t until she began going to the Smash Bros Battle Arena that she spent a lot of time around humans, so the idea of holidays were foreign to her. The battle arena had introduced her to many people and customs that she hadn’t known about.

Not many of the customs stuck in her mind beyond simple pleasantry, and fewer of the people did. She just wasn’t a social animal the way other people seemed to be. She was a mercenary; she spent most of her time alone in space killing things. Though one person had stuck in her mind.

Princess Zelda, ruler of Hyrule, was etched into her brain. Her voice, mannerisms, even the way she looked was stuck into her head in ways that she’d never even imagined were possible. It wasn’t like she was a novice to sexual attraction or anything. She’d spent enough time watching porn vids to understand the basics of that; she’d even indulged her own hormones at space ports and bought a hooker or three for a few nights. This was something else entirely. It was unfamiliar to her.

She couldn’t explain how it had happened. She remembered getting drunk and stumbling into a girl. She remembered getting escorted to that girl’s room and laying on a bed with her. She knew they talked about things she’d never told anyone before, and then she was pretty sure that the girl had kissed her.

She’d woken up in the morning with a massive headache and the boy in the ridiculous green outfit pointing a sword at her. She’d disarmed him without much of a fuss and was about to throw him out the door when the girl from the night before had come hurrying to the room.

It turned out to be Zelda and the boy turned out to be Link the Hero. She didn’t remember the details, but Zelda had left and Link had shown up to escort her back to Hyrule and had found Samus. He thought she’d kidnapped or harmed the Princess and pulled the sword. It was a misunderstanding. They invited Samus back to their kingdom and Samus had agreed.

It was the first of many of her bad emotional decisions. When they returned Link disappeared on a horse and she and Zelda had gone to the castle. She’d spent a few weeks there with the Princess. They’d had more embarrassing discussions and Zelda wheedled information out of her that she wouldn’t have given up under the most grievous of tortures. They’d grown close and eventually Zelda had dragged her to a festival.

She was completely perplexed by the idea of something happening on the same day every year to celebrate it. She didn’t really understand celebrating birthdays that much either. At first Zelda thought that the problem was that Samus was human, but she spent some time using the on board computer in Samus’s ship and learned that humans had holidays. She understood that it was a Chozo trait that Samus had picked up after that.

Eventually Zelda had complied a list of common human holidays and was dead set that she and Samus would celebrate them together. She’d spent the summer months of Hyrule with Zelda, celebrating firework and eating holidays before she decided that she should go take a job so that she could maintain some of her contacts. With the travel time she was going to be gone for eight months. Zelda had made her promise to celebrate all of the holidays on her list. She’d promised.

Zelda had spent the last few days she was in Hyrule programing the relative star dates into her ship’s computer and creating little surprises for her long the way. Mostly Samus sat with while she did it. They played board games, which was frustrating for Samus when they played chess because she would spend the better part of an hour devising a strategy only for Zelda to turn back to the board for a fraction of a second to move her piece into a position that destroyed her hopes. She couldn’t tear Zelda away from her project so she often brought her food from the kitchens and then carried her to the bed in the shuttle when she final collapsed from exhaustion after seventy straight hours of work. She never slept for more than five hours at time so she would often be back at work when Samus herself rolled out of bed.

Some of the holidays were hard to celebrate on her own because winter holidays were mostly gift giving holidays. Thanksgiving resulted in her replicator refusing her rations for a day and then spitting out a fully cooked turkey with mashed potatoes. She spent two days going over the code Zelda had input to find how she’d done that. She landed on her destination and cleaned up the space pirate infestation before Christmas. She was nearly half way back when the ship started chiming Christmas carols at her, as well as popping a message every day for eight days with the location of a gift. She wondered at the Princess’s ingenuity for a few weeks after that. While she was still puzzling out Hanukah’s surprises Christmas had spit out another large dinner and another present. This one almost made her cry. It was a recording of Zelda humming an old Hylian lullaby.

On New Year’s the computer display seemed to link up to a satellite and spent a few hours in standby, leaving her sitting in the cockpit of her ship staring at a black screen. When it finally flickered to life she saw Zelda’s face. Albeit it was through an old camera that the princess had undoubtedly scavenged from her ship. There was no sound so the Zelda just spoke slowly enough for Samus to read her lips. The transaction was only one way, but Zelda revealed her New Year’s Resolution. “To love you, forever.” The connection died shortly after that, but Samus was pleased with the limited interaction they had.

She listened to the Lullaby every day for the remainder of her journey until she landed back in Hyrule shortly before Valentine’s Day.

[End notes: Alright that is the end of the Twenty Five Days of Femslash for 2013. I got off track at least three times during the event, but managed to catch up all but the last time. I had a lot of fun doing this. I might do it next year. If you want me to do it next year, leave me reviews with themes you'd like to see repeated, couples that you liked, and suggestions for themes next year. They don't have to be directly Christmas or winter themed, but props if they are.]
