Chapter 23

Title: Candles

Sometimes Nami was convinced that her crewmates were all imbeciles, like the time that Sanji left the pantry unlocked and Luffy ate all of their food, or the time that Zoro sliced one of the sails in half. Their current moronic action happened to be rooting out and lighting all of the candles on the ship and lighting them.

Wooden ship plus thousands of tiny fires had apparently seemed like a good idea. Luffy and Usopp were the most likely culprits but she was certain that Chopper and Zoro had helped. When she’d asked Luffy why he’d done it, he’d shrugged and said the ship was dark and cold. She was going to kill them one day, and it would probably be as a ghost haunting them because they’d killed her. It would serve them right, the stupid bastards. She’d saved the ship and the crew innumerable times from their careless idiocy.

They never thanked her, always brushed off her concern as naysaying. She was always the party pooper. We can’t go diving because Nami says no. Nami says no because half of the crew will instantly lose consciousness upon contact with the water. They knew those things, but it was always Nami’s fault they couldn’t have fun.

She paused in her internal rampage as spots swam in front of her eyes. She caught herself as she stumbled and sucked in air. She looked down at the room in front of her, still half covered in lit candles. This was only the second room she’d attempted and she was already nearly faint. She was going to kill Luffy and the rest of them.

Behind her someone came through the door. She leaned heavily on the post, gripping it to stop herself from whirling around and hitting that person. She was glad that she didn’t when she heard her voice.

“Navigator-san!” Robin exclaimed. “You’re blowing the candles out manually!” Her voice was full of concern. “You’ll kill yourself!”

“What other way is there?” Nami demanded. Nico Robin giggled a little bit at her before coming around to her side.

“I can use my power to wave away the flames. I won’t tire that way. You’ve practically killed yourself with just a room and a half. I’ve cleared most of the other decks already.” She accepted Robin’s hand on her shoulder and looked up at her friend.

“Thanks Robin. I’m gunna kill Luffy for this next time I see him.”
“You can try, but I don’t think you’ll accomplish it. No one we’ve encountered has been able to, and not for lack of trying.” The taller woman laughed again. She crossed her arms and summoned a quite a few flapping hands to put out the flames of the candles.

“I don’t understand how they lit so many without anyone else noticing. I mean really, there were thousands of candles in our hold. It should have been impossible for them to have done this without anyone seeing.”

“Maybe it was a collaborative plan, with some members of the crew running misdirection while the others lit them all.”

“Why would they do that?”

“I’ve never played at understanding the minds of men, Nami-san.”

“Help me collect these?” Nami asked.

“That I will have to do by hand, my devil power will certainly crush the candles, and they’re still usable in their current state.”

“Okay.”

The two set about collecting the candles and tossing them into an empty barrel in the corner of the room. They worked in relative silence, occasionally making a remark about the unbelievable amount of effort that went into their crewmate’s latest prank.

“Are we the only two cleaning up this mess?” Nami asked.

“When I began, yes. The rest are on deck fishing for dinner.”

“I’m really going to kill them when I get up there. I’m going to shove Luffy into the ocean and he’ll be eaten.”

“I would advise against it.”

“Now you’re the logical one, Robin.”

“Perhaps not.”

“What makes you say that?”

“What if I told them that you and I would take care of the candles so that we would have a few hours alone below deck? Would that sound like a poorly made emotional decision?”

“Why would you do that?” Nami had stood up and was stretching her back. Robin had halted and was looking at the navigator. She crossed the room to stand next to her.

“So I could do this?” The devil fruit user leaned in, grasping her comrade’s chin. Nami didn’t flinch away, but leaned into the kiss. They kissed for a few long moments before Robin pulled away and looked with surprise onto Nami’s face. “I never expected to get this response.”

“I never expected you to be the one that kissed me.”

They smiled at one another and returned to the kissing. Nami leaned back against the support beam, bringing Robin with her. Her arms snaked around her friend’s shoulders, pulling them closer together. Robin pressed their bodies close together before pulling her lips back for a few seconds to get air. Nami deviated from her lips, tracking light kisses down her neck and nipping at her collarbone. Robin groaned appreciatively and craned her head back. Nami kissed her way back up Robin’s neck. The other woman whimpered as she nipped particularly hard at her pulse point, Nami held onto her as she tried to flinch away. The woman actually leaned back into her as Nami’s hands as they wandered to bottom. The redhead squeezed and felt Robin lean back into her farther. Robin buried her fingers in Nami’s hair and jerked her back to her mouth.

This time when their lips met, Robin was aggressive. The force of her kiss pushed Nami’s head back and left her nearly gasping when the dark haired woman finally broke the kiss. Robin picked Nami up and pinned her against the beam, grinding a thigh into her core. “I didn’t think that you would ever be so forward!” Nami gasped as she clutched Robin’s back.
