Chapter 10

Title: Secret Santa

[Author's notes: Hah, I finally caught up. Tenth on the Tenth.]

Korra couldn’t believe that she’d gotten Asami. She had to buy a present for Asami. It was Bolin’s fault, and stupid Mako’s, they’d played the ‘my family used to do this card’ and then she and Asami had given in. They’d agreed to exchange gifts, but in a secret way, they couldn’t reveal who bought what. Each person had drawn a name out of a sock because no one had a hat on hand and she’d pulled Asami! She was a great friend, and secretly Korra had a crush on her, which was made this a disaster. Korra didn’t know how to buy a good ‘we’re best friends’ present without also conveying ‘I have a crush on you and calculated this present to show you how much I care’. She sighed in exasperation for nearly the hundredth time since she’d begun the shopping expedition.

“This isn’t hard Korra; Asami will love anything you get her.” Jinorra complained from her left side. “We’ve been out for three hours. Dad’s going to come looking for us!”

“This situation is far more complicated than you know Jinorra!” She snapped back. “What makes you think she’ll like my present so much?”

“She loves you.” Jinorra shrugged. “I mean my mom loves everything my dad gets her for her birthday even though most of it is weird stuff that she doesn’t even want. Like old Airbender stuff, relics. He’s entrusted her with half of our culture because he can’t buy presents. She loves everything, because he gave it to her.”
“Wai-Wait, Wait! The part where she loves me, go back to that. You can’t possibly know that!”

“You have to see it too; I mean she looks at you the way she used to look at Mako when she thought no one could see. It’s a weird look, but it makes her eyes all bright and her face gets all crumpled, like when a Lemur doesn’t get his treat. He can see it but doesn’t get it.”

          “She’s frowning at me Jinorra.”

“It’s the frown of love Korra.”
“She’s not going to know it was from me anyway.”

“Yes she will, she’ll know because Mako would have done something like get a piece of jewelry and Bolin would get her tickets for a mover because she loves those. You on the other hand will spend hours out here looking for something perfect. The problem is, you’ve found so many perfect things but you’re afraid she’ll know that you love her.”

          “I don’t-“

“You do, you look at her like Chief Beifong looks at my dad.”

“You’re way too perceptive for a kid your age.” Korra scowled. “So do I get her a perfect gift?”

“Are you ready to tell her you love her? Or do you want to be in limbo for longer?”

“I don’t know, it was so easy with Mako because well, I wouldn’t be the lesbian avatar with him. I’d be the avatar with the pro bending boyfriend, now the detective boyfriend. I don’t want her to deal with hate crimes or people turning away from future industries because we’re together. I don’t want her to hate me for loving her. I really don’t.”

“She already loves you too Korra.”

“Yeah but she can at least ignore it because she thinks I don’t like her back. If we both confess, there really is nothing holding her back.”

          “But that’s a good thing.”

“Yeah, I guess. C’mon kid, I found the perfect present an hour ago. Let’s go pick it out and go back to the Island. Your dad is going to give me an earful already.”

“You think that Korra and Asami have figured out that this is a plan to get them together yet?” Mako asked his brother as he came in the door.

“No way, its secret. They won’t know until they open their presents. Its genius.” Bolin answered from the kitchen. “Even if they do, they have to confront us about our dead parents. No way they’ll do that and even if they did they would still be doing it together so they’d have to admit there’s something between them.”

“Totally foolproof?” Mako questioned, hanging his coat. “What’s for dinner?”

“I made noodles!” Bolin crowed brandishing it out of the kitchen door. “Special for you with that miso sauce you like.”

          “Thanks Bolin.”

          “Welcome.”

xxxxxA few days laterxxx

Asami was losing her damn mind over Bolin and Mako’s little request. It would have been fine, but she’d pulled Korra’s name out of the damn sock after she pulled her own. Stupid brothers and their dumb dead parents, providing a perfect opportunity to out herself to Korra and the whole world. This was unreal, of all people to crush on, why the female avatar. She’d spent a few weeks after returning to Republic City toying around with Lin, but the Chief had rebuked her after a few steamy kisses offering some excuse about the age difference between the two of them. As though she was an idiot, she’d seen the way Lin and Kya had taken advantage of all the space everyone was willing to give Lin when they’d gone to the South Pole last year, it was clear the two of them had some kind of long standing relationship. So she was forced to confront her feelings for the avatar.

She’d done something stupid. She’d made a damn present, and as soon as Korra saw it she would know just how much Asami liked her. She glared at the box. “I can’t believe myself.” She muttered as she picked it up and prepared to leave the house. It was an engagement necklace. She’d carved it out of whale bone she’d broken off of a water tribe spear and used red lace as the collar portion. This was ludicrous; you don’t ask an avatar out on a date with a proposal for marriage. “Why not be direct, it’s already going to be obvious what you want with any other present. Don’t be a coward Asami.”
