Chapter 14

“Hey Delilah. Is the fire going good?”“Yeah.” I poke at the amber flames with my stick and wriggle my toes at the bottom of the sleeping bag.Isabelle steps out of the small tent and looks up at the sky. “Mnn; that rain may come early.”“Mnnnngh, don’t tell me that Isabelle.”Isabelle chuckles and has a look at the fire. “Great, I’ll get the marshmallows.”“Yum.” I look up through the trees and see the darkening clouds. I feel a shiver and close my eyes as I rub my arms. It will be cold tonight, rain or not.“Delilah!!!”My eyes shoot open and I see flames licking at the bottom of the sleeping bad. I let out a shriek and jump out as fast as I am able. Alarm bells ring, fire, fire! But I don’t know how to put it out. Sharp sticks dig though my socks jabbing my feet. Isabelle pushes me aside and with a shovel covers the flames with dirt. Then she stamps on the bag dousing all the flames.By the time she turns to me I am on the ground and hugging my knees into my chest as I hold back tears. “Lil? You ‘kay?”I swallow and try to be silent as the tears begin to prickle my eyes; my silence fails and I let out a choked sob. “Oh, Delilah.” I hear Isabelle come toward me. “It’s okay.”“N-no it isn’t!” I shout looking up at my friend. “Don’t forgive me so easily!” I look away at the end of the sentence and close my eyes as the first tear trails down my cheek.“Wha-What do you mean?”“I am so useless. I can’t even sit beside a fire properly. I ruined your sleeping bag...”“Delilah, you aren’t useless, anyone could have made your mistake.”“You told me not to sit too close Isabelle! And I did anyway.”“But its fine, no one was hurt or injured...and that sleeping bag is really old anyhow. No harm done Delilah.” Isabelle takes another step closer to me.“Aren’t you even a bit annoyed?! I mean, don’t you think I\'m stupid? Because I am! I am....So stupid! I-I don’t even know why you care!”“I care because I-I” Isabelle takes a breath to calm herself. “I care because I am your friend Delilah.” She finally sits beside me and puts her arm over my shoulder. I suddenly feel childish at my outburst and leaned my head against my friend and brush the tears from my reddened face.“I\'m sorry I lost my temper. I wasn’t angry at you.”“It’s...” Isabelle is about to answer before she looks up to the sky. I feel cold drops of water, cool and refreshing on my cheek.“Oh, no.”“You take the swag.”“What do you mean?”“It will be cold tonight; and you now have no sleeping bag.”“What about you though?” “I can sleep in the tent.”“But then you’ll get cold.”Isabelle shrugs. “I’ll live.” She stands up and picks up the shovel. The rain gets a little heavier. “I was the one who ruined the sleeping bag...I should be the one in the tent.”Isabelle has just enough time to douse the fire before the rain begins to pour. I let out a shout and run into the shelter of the tent. Isabelle joins me and puts the shovel on the ground as the wind begins to pick up. If it were a little chilly before then it was definitely cold now. I rubbed my arms. “I can’t allow you to sleep in here.”“Well I won’t allow you to sleep here neither. I’ll even put you into the swag myself if I have to.”I chew my lip and look outside at the swag. “W-would it fit the two of us?”“Maybe, would be a bit of a squeeze though...”“Well then, problem solved. If that’s okay by you?”“Yeah.” Isabelle answers hot off the mark. “I mean...its fine. You’re pretty small so it shouldn’t be too bad.”“Okay...ummmm, so what now?”“Well I’ll take off my boots before going in...And then I’ll go out and open it up...then you’ll quickly jump in.” All the while of saying this Isabelle was attacking her boots laces and had taken off one of the boots by the end of it. “And then I’ll hop in after you.”“Alright then.”Isabelle has both boots off and looks at me and gives me a little smile as she grabs the marshmallows. “I can’t see why we shouldn’t miss out on our snack.” I laugh at her comment and Isabelle joins me as she gets ready to run out. “Oh, and zip this up once you’re out okay?”“Yeah...”Isabelle runs out and quickly opens the swag, waving me forward. I glance quickly at the sky, before jumping out of the tent and zipping it up before running to Isabelle and laughing as I jump into the confined space. We’re both wet and my feet are soaked as Isabelle jumps in and zips up the swag to keep out the rain.We both laugh as we try to arrange ourselves and I feel something hard in my side. I grab it. A torchlight. I flick it on.“Ahh, Lil!”“Oh my god, sorry Isabelle.” I shine the light away from my friends face...and the light lands instead upon my friends’ slightly exposed and wet chest. The light stays there for what was only a small moment but I let out a gasp nonetheless and fumble with the light that turns off as it hits me in the face; extracting a yelp of pain that disguises my gasp.“Woah, you okay?”We finally settle and Isabelle turns the light back on and giggles as she flicks some of her dark hair away from her face.I hold my cheek where the torch hit and nod my head. “Mnn-hmm, I\'m alright...”“Here, let me see.”I keep my hand on my face and feel my face warm up as I blush. Maybe sharing the swag wasn’t such a good idea. I shift my position as I keep my hand on my face. “U-uh...it’s fine.”Isabelle laughs and takes my hand tugging at it. “Let me see you goof!” I laugh and at the same time feel my face grow hotter as I become more and more conscious of my friends’ body so close to mine. “Okay, okay.” I allow Isabelle to move my hand from my face and lean my head back as I close my eyes. Isabelle shines the torch carefully at my cheek and I feel myself swallow as I become aware of her thigh pressed between my legs. “Yeah, it looks okay.” I open my eyes and see Isabelle above me smiling as she rubs my cheek a little.“U-uh...so what now?”“Well...” Isabelle starts before she (THANKFULY!!) moves so she’s sitting more to one side of the swag. She is still close...but at least she\'s no longer atop of me. I watch her shine the light around and listen to the pounding of the rain all around us. “Where’d I put it? A ha! Got it.” She grins; I see her wave a bag of marshmallows in front of my face.I laugh at the happiness in my friends face. “And you try telling me that I am the goofy one.” I scoff in false castigation.Isabelle laughs along with me and opens the bag of marshmallows as she does so. “Yeah well at least I\'m not in denial.” She giggles. I laugh nervously with her for a moment and shake my head and raise my hand awkwardly to push some hair from my face.“Marshmallow?”“Please.”We lay under the pounding rain in the warm swag eating the marshmallows. Laughing at Isabelles bad jokes and puns. We talk of school and even talk about the bad luck of the rain...Secretly though, I thank god for the rain...and the opportunity to be close to my most caring friend...
