Chapter 1

 Love is a Weakness

From the day Whiskey joined the Dollhouse, Adelle had been oddly protective of her. No, even before then - when the woman Whiskey had once been, signed the contract to become a doll. The policy had been slightly stricter in the beginning, but Adelle knew she had to accept the woman that came to her, pleading for a new life. It wasn't until Alpha went mad and attacked Whiskey that the British woman realized why she had given into those pleas. It explained why she never assigned Whiskey to any clients who wanted her to 'play' with her and why she became jealous the handful of times she had no other choice but to. DeWitt was in love.

Love was a very odd thing for Adelle. Especially when you had guarded yourself so carefully that you were sure you couldn't fall in love, or at least, you hoped you wouldn't. All love did was present problems. It weaken oneself because you ended up spending all your time thinking about the object of your desire, worrying and fretting about them. A woman like Adelle couldn't afford a distraction like that in her life. She had to show that she could handle her job with a calm and cool eye, especially in such a male dominated world. Any distractions could easily destroy her carefully established plans. However, Adelle failed to realize that she was only human and nothing more. It was all a matter of time before something like this would happen. Love was a weakness that Adelle could not escape being the victim of.

When Whiskey became Claire, Adelle became a victim to her emotions. Fear of losing the woman was what pushed her to act on her impulses. Whiskey's life as Claire was a new beginning for both women. Adelle carefully eased the woman into a gentle reassurance before she let her heart give way and took their relationship to the next level. There were no fantasies of living happily ever after, no kind of expectation beyond just being with Claire every chance she could. Living a carefree life of grandeur was not a realistic option in the small world of the Dollhouse. However, as Adelle watched Claire sleep peacefully in her large king size bed, hair and sheets ruffled, she was happy. Despite the scars and hardship Claire had faced, she was still a beautiful individual, no matter what her name was. Touching a scar tentatively, so not to wake the slumbering woman, the British woman exhaled softly.

If there was one thing Alpha couldn't take from her when he had attacked Claire that first time, it was these moments. The ones where she felt at peace with the world and she could briefly imagine that her life was perfect. At least until night gave way to morning and Adelle had to go back to her daily routines.
