She Loved Me

She was the most lovely thing I had ever seen. The wedding dress was a present from Setsuna and would have more than her father made in a year, but despite that, on her it was merely an accessory that paled in compression to the beautiful vision that was Usagi.
I wanted to hold her in my arms, to kiss her wonderful lips, and to never let her go. But letting her go was exactly what I was doing. Not because it was the right thing to do or even because we'd all been told it was destiny, but because it was what seemed to make her happy. But I wouldn't let her go without letting her know.
"Usagi, there's something I need tell you..."
She looked at me with those large blue eyes, and I felt my heart melting and breaking all at once. The gentle smile on face said she was content with things as they were, but for the first time I noticed an overwhelming sadness deeply hidden in her eyes.
"Don't say it, Rei." she told me. She stepped up to me and placed a finger gently on my lips "It'll just make this harder than it already going to be." And when she kissed me, I knew.
I knew that she was only doing what she saw as her duty. That this whole wedding was just another sacrifice she was making to save humanity. I knew that she expected me to do my duty as well, no matter how painful it would be. And I knew that she loved me just as much as I loved her.
And when she pulled away, nothing more needed to be said. Because I knew that her love would give me the strength I needed to do what needed to be done despite the pain in my heart.
