CHAPTER 8: The Real Origin of Team Go.

--[June 25th 1995]--

The young girl pressed her nose close to the glass of the display case. Her green eyes focused on the glittering jewel inside. Even in the darkness of the museum\'s nighttime lighting, it gave off a dancing multicolored glow. Her breath fogged the glass as she attached a set of wires to the alarm leads of the case. A crooked smile formed on her twelve year old lips as the alarm to the case was bypassed.

Her name was Sherry Moonflower Thorne, but for tonight her codename was She. Using a codename was her older brother\'s idea. Something he picked up from some heist movie he saw a few years ago. She couldn\'t remember what it was called. Lake Puppies? River Wolves? Whatever. His codename was He, her other brother was known as Me and their youngest siblings, the twins, were known as We since they did everything the same. As a family of thieves, or so He figured, it was a good idea to use fake names.

She began to cut her way through the glass. The tool made a satisfying sound as it etched a circle in the enclosure. Tonight she was going to prove to her brothers, once and for all, she was the best thief of any of them. The thrill they all got from taking what wasn\'t theirs was only exceeded by their rivalry. That was why they did it.

Once She finished the cut, she removed the tool and tapped on the circle of glass. It fell inward, giving her access to inside of the case. Reaching in with a gloved hand, she grasped the large rock and pulled it free. It was almost as big as her head and weighed more than she expected. With care, she placed it in the small backpack at her feet. It\'s glow disappeared as she closed the top flap.

She slung the pack onto her back and made her way toward the rear of the museum. She made her escape the same way she came in, through the loading dock door. Her smile widened as she hopped on her bicycle and rode into the night, imagining the look on her brother\'s faces when she showed them her prize.

Early morning sunlight filtered in through the leaves of the tall tree. The dappled light came in through a window of the treehouse that was the family hideout. She chuckled to herself as she climbed through the trapdoor in the floor. She set her backpack down and looked at all the stolen property that cluttered the small wooden structure. To one side were the TV\'s and DVD players He was fond of stealing. Under the only window were the comic books and candy We shoplifted. A bunch of cell phones and wallets were scattered around the little open floorspace left, Me was pretty good at picking pockets. Her own stuff, mostly jewelry and clothes, were in a neat box in the corner. It was a good thing their mother was afraid of heights, and never visited the treehouse. It would be difficult to explain it all if their mom found out what her kids did for kicks.

A sound from below made her stick her head back down through the door. She saw her brothers, each laden with sacks and packs, heading for the base of the tree. She moved back from the door so they could get inside. In the tight confines of the treehouse, her movement caused her to nudge her backpack. It fell over with a thud and her precious loot tumbled out and rolled toward the trapdoor.

Scrambling, she tried to catch the jewel, but the sunlight hit it and the light it gave off dazzled her for just long enough for it to slip through her fingers. She blinked and watched as it fell through the opening and plummeted toward the ground far below. Fear that the crystal would shatter made her cry out a warning to her brothers. They were standing right at the base of the tree. She jerked her head back and missed seeing the actual impact.

Polychromatic light spread over the whole backyard as the jewel hit the ground. Her brothers were caught in it like deer in headlights. She felt the warmth of it on her hands, the only part of her left exposed to the light directly. When the light disappeared, She peeked down through the trapdoor. A sense of foreboding flooded through her as she saw her siblings laying on the ground, unconscious, but apparently unharmed. It was only then that she noticed there was no sign of the jewel anywhere.

--[Present]--

“I blamed myself for what happened to us, but most especially them, that day.” Shego hung her head so nobody could see the look in her eyes. “The crystal gave us all super powers, but it also affected them more. I guess because they were so directly exposed.”

She tilted her head up and looked around at the group listening raptly to her story. “I was twelve years old. My hands were glowing. My brothers changed colors. I had no idea what to do.” Shego shook her head wistfully. “I woke them up. That\'s when I found out how bad things really were. It completely erased their memories.”

Kim brought a hand to her mouth. She saw the pain in Shego\'s eyes. “Why the whole comet story Hego told me? He seemed convinced that is what happened. He even had this neat animation of it.”

Shego let out a small shorting laugh. “Like I said, I was twelve. I was scared I was going to be in trouble. I got them all into our house and tried to figure out what to do. Thankfully mom was at work when it happened. I tried to figure out how to explain it all. That\'s when I remembered one of the comic books We stole. It gave me an idea. One that would explain everything. The super powers. The stolen goods. Their memory loss. Everything.”

She lit her hand afire and stared at it a moment before extinguishing it again. “I went back out to the treehouse. I used my new power to blast it down. The stolen stuff was burned to unrecognizable slag. All that was left was a smoldering crater. I went back in and called mom, the fire department, the police, anyone I could thing of. I told them all a giant comet hit our treehouse. Funny. It was such a stupid story, but it worked. I guess that\'s because there wasn\'t a actual reasonable explanation.

It took about a year to reeducate the boys. It was during that time one of them, I can\'t remember if it was Hego or Mego, got the idea we should all be superheroes. I still felt guilty about it all, so I went along. I even came up with the idea to alter our codenames, adding the go, for Go City to them. It was actually fun for a while, but, you know...”

Kim could see Shego wasn\'t enjoying dredging up the past, so she simply gave her a hug and changed the subject. “So that brings us back to the original question. If it was the crystal, not a comet, what was it that really happened?” She looked over at Drakken. “You said it wasn\'t magic...”

Drakken nodded. “Quite right. The powers are actually multidimensional energy based nanotechnology. The actual physical, mechanical if you will, aspect of it doesn’t even reside in our universe, just the energy part.”

Betty asked the question on everyone\'s mind. “So how did it get here?”

Kysmerisikapativolrebat lifted a tentacle to gain everyone’s attention. “If I may answer?”

The alien scuttled over to where Drakken stood. He reached up and changed the settings on the view screen. It now showed a picture of the galaxy. “The Whites brought the technology here. Unlike My own race, the Lowardians, or even the Gray’s, they are actually inter-dimensional travelers. Their physical forms really exist in their own dimension, only their energy projections exist in ours. They are scientists at heart and meddlers in actuality. They go from planet to planet, leaving devices, artifacts, and the like there for the inhabitants to find.”

He changed the screen to show a succession of objects. A glowing sword, a medallion with a picture of a monkey on it, a glowing crystal. Many more things followed as he continued. Not all, but many, seemed to have a monkey-like theme. “As you can see most are centered on your evolutionary past, others on significant historical or mythological things. This is how they make such things appealing. Their reason for doing this is to test and alter other civilizations so they can study the effects of those changes.”

Kim interrupted as a picture of another amulet appeared. “I recognize that one! It\'s the Anubis amulet, the one Jackie Oaks had.”

Pat gave what passed for a nod for his race. “Yes. I found all these things in news stories and databases with Wade\'s help. They are focus items for the powers. Many are tied to such items, or bestowed by them as in the case with Shego and her brothers. Others are free form in nature, like the one you had. They must be passed somehow between people. Yours required the death of the holder.”

Kim raised her eyebrows questioningly. “So my power went to somebody else?”

Pat answered with a tentacle shrug. “I do not know. The one who killed you died immediately after. If it passed to him, it also passed to his killer.” He turned to look at Shego. So did everyone else.

Shego shook her head. “I don\'t have it. Things were a bit hazy, but I think I would have noticed it like I did the first time, when it went to Kimmie.”

Kim nodded. She well remembered how it felt to have the dark power melding with her. “You would have. So where is it then?”

Pat did the shrug thing again. “It may be lost or have found another, I am not sure of the whole mechanics of it all.”

Kim found the answer unsatisfactory. “Not good enough. I want it back!”

Drakken grinned widely, crinkling the scar under his eye in the process. “And you shall have it back! Thanks to my work with the Pan-Dimensional Vortex Inducer, that you acquired for me, we can go to the White\'s dimension and take all their technology! With it at our disposal, we shall become invincible!”

Shego rolled her eyes at her former boss’s gleeful statement.

At the same time, Kim was even less enthusiastic about it. She thought the same of the Lowardian nanotechnology when they acquired it. It was good, but not good enough. She wasn\'t going to get her hopes up again. She would do it, but her days of relying on technology alone were over. If it could be taken away, like her wrist band had, she wasn\'t going to fully trust it. It was better to trust in the talents and abilities of herself and her people.

She also had the plan to consider. Right now things were in good hands, Ricardo\'s. It would take time for him to get the ball rolling on spreading the super technology worldwide. It would also take time for her plan to destabilize and infiltrate key positions using criminals and Global Security. That meant more waiting. The real changes couldn\'t come until the world was ready.

Only one other thing concerned her. One fly in the ointment she had to consider before traipsing off to some other dimension. Ron Stoppable.

Rufus lay on the cold metal of the examination table. He shivered as Justine ran a beeping probe over his pink skin. He could see Professor Cranium behind her, inputting the data it gathered into a computer console. He lost track of how many tests they ran on him in the last few hours.

Justine set the probe down and stepped over to the computer. Rufus could hear them discussing the results in whispers. When Justine turned around she had an uncustomary smile on her face.

Ron Stoppable looked puzzled as he asked. “Energy based nanowhatsis?”

Justine nodded as she looked across the dinner table at him. “Nanotechnology. From the energy signature, I surmise it comes from an extra-dimensional source.”

As usual, her explanation went mostly over his head. “So it\'s not really magic?”

Cranium interjected. “Precisely. The good lord only knows how or why, but it exists.”

Justine frowned slightly at the large headed genius. He was extremely brilliant, but his illogical dependency on a mythological higher power was beginning to grate on her nerves. She continued to address Ron. “What it means is this. There may be a way to restore to you what you call Mystical Monkey Power.”

That Ron understood completely. “How?”

Justine reached down below the table and lifted a device up and sat it before him.

Electronique raised her wire-like eyebrows when she saw it. “Is that not a Kinomatic Continuum Disruptor?”

Justine stroked the device lovingly. “Yes it is. I built it as my science project my sophomore year in high school. With some minor adjustments, I am sure I can use it to access the dimension the energy based nanotechnology originated from.”

Ron gulped loudly as he remembered the day of the science fair. “That\'s great, I guess, but I just have one question...”

All eyes turned to him.

His were locked on the device warily. “That gigantic mutant dinosaur isn\'t still in there, is it?”
