Chapter 3

Erin looked at the tall business man, and he stared back at her. Faye’s father seemed to be around a young age, like, around 28-ish, and yet he had this professional touch. However, if the man was 28, then he must have had Faye around…a very, very, young age. To be exact, he was probably Faye’s age when he … ‘made’ her.

He had this distant look in his eyes, as if he were miles away, and at a glance at Faye, it didn’t look like she was particularly exulting being near him. It was a few minutes after Erin ended her very shameful day dream, and she was silently following Faye to the car…and was a bit surprised when she saw a limo there, and a driver opening the seat. Faye had already informed her father that Erin would ride with them, and the man standing next to the limo moved to let them enter. Faye’s father entered first, sitting in the seat that had his back facing the front of the car, and Erin and Faye vice versa.

The old man who was the driver closed the door, and walked around, and entered. Erin looked around, amazed at first, never really thinking that in one short morning many amazing things could happen, but was surprised at the awkward silence. Faye’s father had a blackberry out, and Erin assumed that he was…doing something on the phone. Rich stuff.

Basing on what Dawn said, Faye’s family must’ve been rich. However, the short ride…was, well, short, and they arrived at the school fast enough. Erin was about to open the door but stopped when she saw Faye’s dad looking at her, as if saying ‘What are you doing?’, and pulled back her hand, waiting for the driver to open the door. Erin wasn’t surprised to see many eyes on her and Faye as they exited the limousine, since people don’t arrive in limos everyday.

The driver closed the door and drove off, and Erin turned to Faye, with a grin. “Holy Cheetoes… How come I never saw you before if you come in this?” Erin asked, noting the serious face Faye had. To Erin, Faye usually had one of those calm faces, and it was nice when she smiled, and incredibly cute when she was mad, but that was all Erin could see. At the moment.

Faye sighed, and shrugged, and casually said, “My dad was home for once. And I needed to go to the Art Shop to buy a few stencils…and then the whole thing with running into you…I usually ride the bus here though.” Erin nodded, absorbing the information Faye had stated, and smiled.

“Well, I usually walk to school and walk home, sometimes I take the bus though…hey, hey, what’s your favorite color?”

Faye smiled, and pondered for a moment, before smiling and saying, “Blue. Definitely blue, any shade of it. Why?” Erin grinned, and shrugged, and started to walk in circles around Faye, who watched her a bit confused but with that light smile on her lips.

“Hey, can you draw something for me? We have time before school, anything? Is that okay? Is it?” Erin said, while beginning to bounce while she walked around the taller girl, who smiled and said, “Okay, but we need to go to a more secluded place.”

Erin stopped and gasped. “Oh my god, are you going to molest me?!” and put her hand up to her mouth to add to the dramatic effect. Faye blushed a bit, before giving Erin that small smile she always had and said, “No, I’m going to rape you,” as a counter attack.

Erin was actually slightly surprised by Faye’s answer, and smiled big for it. Oh, we can have one of those games where we insult each other back and forth! Wait, I don’t want to insult her. But then if I compliment her, she’ll get freaked out. But if I don’t, what if she thinks I think she’s ugly? Or maybe she thinks that I think she’s pretty? Or maybe I think that she thinks that I think…ACK! Erin was lost in her thoughts, before shaking her head and jumping in front of Faye and stared her right in the eye.

“You’re beautiful.”

Faye looked at her, seriously, before giggling and having a faint blush on her cheeks. “T-thank you…?” Faye said, unsure if Erin was kidding or not, and Erin just smiled and pulled Faye to the empty corridor of the school, and sat on a bench that was on the side. “So, what are you going to draw? What? A cat? The clouds? The WORLD?!” Erin said, hopping around excitedly.

Faye smiled, and just quietly said, “You’ll see…” and pulled out her sketch pad and a drawing pencil. Erin sat next to her, and since the bench was a bit tall, she swung her legs and whistled a tune and waited for Faye to finish. Erin looked up at the sky, it was still dark-ish, and the sun was coming up, making it a pink-ish orange, but it was really pretty. Looking over at Faye, who was heavily concentrated, she decided not to spoil herself and look at what she was drawing, but instead just stared at Faye.

Her face looked concentrated, and her blue eyes had this serious tone, and she looked at the paper, studying it, as if picturing what she was going to draw in her mind. Then she did something Erin never thought someone would do. Faye took a deep breath, smiled, and closed her eyes, her hands moving like a blur on the paper.

Her hair went down her shoulders, and Erin looked at what Faye was wearing. Today, she wore a white shirt, and at the moment Erin was unable to see what was visible at the front, but she wore a dark blue dress that went to her middle of her thighs, and black tights that went to the top of her shins, and black flats with a bow above the toe. We’re really different people…yet she’s…really…I don’t know…how to explain it… Erin thought sadly.

Right now, looking at Faye made her happy, but it made her something else. It’s like it made her feel…sad, but serious. Like she felt that being around Faye changed her, and it wasn’t the person she was that Eileen and Joe knew, it was something different. Erin couldn’t quite put her tongue onto it, but she was sure that there was something about Faye.

The way she acted, dressed, and had this look in her eye…she was far too mature, but laid back. She was nice, and she certainly got along with Erin, and she dressed sophisticatedly, not in a nerdy way, but in a nice, semi-formal way that looked nice when going out, something Urban-ish, and when Erin looked in her eyes…she looked sad. Empty? Erin thought.

Faye was a bit difficult to read, and maybe perhaps because Erin didn’t really know Faye, however, she felt as the two ‘clicked’. Before she knew it, Faye’s beautiful blue eyes were open, and she had that small smile on her face as she admired the picture in her hands. She ripped out the picture and handed it to Erin, who was amazed by what it was. It was Erin, who was sitting there on a beach, and there were foottracks, but two. Two pairs, and yet she was alone. What did it mean? For some reason, the picture made Erin feel incredibly despondent, and the beauty of it... the her in the picture looked like her. In her own eyes, Faye managed to capture the sad glint, and yet that smile she had on her face.

“I…its amazing!” Erin said, and looked at Faye who was smiling, glad that Erin liked it. Erin looked at Faye, amazed, completely amazed. “Faye…your really really AWESOME! I mean, you drew it without looking…the best I can do without looking is play video games, I mean, I can’t point a camera randomly and flash a few pics here…your seriously cool!” Erin said, and then added, “Wait, had did you draw it without looking?”

Faye looked at Erin seriously, and then looked down. “I tend to remember things that interest me…” she said quietly, but loud enough for Erin to hear. Erin stopped smiling, and studied Faye, a blush growing on her cheeks. For someone to say 7 words and render her speechless was practically impossible, since Erin was a bit talkative, however Erin felt touched at what Faye said, but for some reason some part of her felt a doubt that she was really that much important to Faye.

“Then…I bet you remember a lot of things?” Erin said with a weak voice, which almost cracked, and bit her bottom lip. Faye looked at her, and smiled. “No…only you,” before leaning in close to the shorter girl’s face and kissing Erin’s left cheek, either trying to make Erin feel happy, or tell Erin something, but Erin’s head was full of clouds once contact was made.

Erin looked at Faye, a bit shocked, and they looked at each other. Deep, blue eyes, into Erin’s hazel eyes with golden flecks, that seemed brighter than usual. Erin’s face was fully flushed by now, and she was rendered thoughtless by a simple action of something that was out of friendship…or so Erin thought.

Faye smiled, a brighter smile than usual, before her smile disappeared and her face twisted in intense pain, and her breathing began to sound heavier. Erin studied Faye, confused and unsure about what to do, and stayed still when Faye put her hand on her chest, closed her eyes, and breathed in and out at slow, long paces. Soon, Faye grabbed her bag in roughly, and taking an inhaler, breathing, and pulling out a bottle of medicine, and swallowed a pill before reaching for a water bottle and drinking it down.

Erin tilted her head, a bit confused, before Faye shakily answered her unasked question, saying, “I…I have really…bad… asthma,” she said as if she were hesitating to tell Erin something, and looked away to the side while putting her stuff in her bag gently unlike how she grabbed it, and leaned back, as if letting the drugs go into her system.

Erin replied, “A…are you okay? You looked like it hurt…really badly…” Erin felt this cold pit in her stomach and this pang in her heart that hurt her mentally, but Faye just shook her head and gave a Erin a weak smile. A few moments passed in silence before Faye looked at Erin, with that smile, and the pain gone from her face, and said, “So…Erin…how about you? What’s being you like?”

Erin thought for a moment, and grinned. “Well, I’m me I guess…as you can see, I think I’m retarded, but let’s put that matter aside. Me and Eileen looove video games. Joe’s not really into video games, but I liked running around with him. And as you know, I used to be on the track team and cross country team things, but…yeah, things happened, and I can’t be in it for these four years, though I’d give up anything to be in it,” Erin said, letting out the end of her sentence with a sigh.

“Why’d you quit?”

Erin looked at Faye, not understanding what she meant at first, but then looked down. “I didn’t quit.”

It was Faye’s turn to look at Erin’s sad hazel eyes with the golden specks and feel the knives pierce her heart, but her gaze was interrupted by the sudden ring of the bell, indicating that it was time to head for first period.

Erin sighed, as she slid into her seat in English. Unlike with Joe, she had Eileen in her beginning classes, and sat next to her most of that time since both of their last names started with a G. Eileen, sat into hers, and unlike Erin, could have her feet reach the floor. Erin bit her lip, and smiled, and jumped onto Eileen’s lap.

“Woah!” Eileen said, surprised by the sudden weight applied onto her legs, and Erin twisted her body and stared at Eileen, and in a dramatic voice, said, “I AM A FRENCH FRY!”

The classmates around them that paid attention to Erin’s weird antics burst into laughter, while Erin giggled and bounced off Eileen’s leg, and jumped into her seat, sitting criss-cross on it and humming a random song.

Class, as usual, passed by fast. Eileen, who was usually smart, didn’t take up on English Honors because of the fact that she wasn’t as good as she was in English than she was in Math and Physics. Erin was just at an average level.

PE was normal, Erin sitting out alone the whole time, watching Eileen run. Today was a B day, so Erin had her last four classes with Faye….and Joe. Erin sighed, and smiled, and opened her binder and admired the picture Faye drew. But, looking at it made her feel more alone than she was there in that corner watching others groan in disgust in running a mile. She knew a few other kids and Eileen loved it, since she had known them from before.

“That’s a nice picture…” a voice said, and Erin looked up. He looked young, but he wasn’t a freshman, a sophomore, and he wore glasses. Not the geeky ones, the thick-rimmed emo ones. Not to be stereotypical, but that’s as good as Erin could describe it, since she didn’t need glasses. Erin grinned and replied, “My…friend….drew it. She’s amazing…” Erin said with a dreamy voice.

The boy grinned, and sat next to Faye. He had those skinny jeans on, like the ones hardcore skaters had, but blue and black Nike Dunks on, and a blue and grey striped shirt on that wasn’t baggy, with a blue cast on his right arm up to his elbow. He had two piercing on the top of his left here, two metal studs, and a stud on his lower left lip. He had jet black hair, which was in a fohawk, and cold blue eyes, and unlike Faye’s beautiful deep blue ones, they were cold and scary. But basing on the boys grin, he didn’t seem like he was mean, or scary, though he was quite pale.

“Sounds like your in love,” he said in a light, cheery voice. Erin grinned and let out a soft laugh. “I’m not like that,” she lied, obviously not ready to come out to people she didn’t know. He patted Erin on the head, obviously accentuating the fact that she was short, which she pouted, but she found the pats comforting.

“My name is Ryan, yours?” he said, and faced Erin. Erin smiled and said, “Well, Ryan, my name is Erin,” and grabbed his hand and shook it until it came off, well, not literally.

“So, Erin, why are you always sitting here during PE? I mean, I always saw you here, but I finally got a reason,” he said, and lifted up his right arm, “Broke it in two places during skating,” he said, a bit proud of it.

Erin grinned, and took out a pen. “May I sign?” she said, and lifted the pen. Ryan nodded and she drew her name and a big smiley face and put, Ryan’s New Friend, under it. Ryan smiled to after, since Erin started making stick people running around his cast, and drew a nuclear bomb killing them.

“Violent, aren’t you?” Ryan laughed, “So, time to answer my question, why do I always see you sitting here shrimp?”

Erin shrugged, and muttered, “I got a life time problem, I can’t do anything that involves stress onto my leg…for a long time.” Ryan nodded, and to Erin’s suspicions, asked what a lot of people usually asked, except Faye who respected and minded her own business, “What happened to your leg?”

Erin sighed, and with a sad glint in her eye, looked down, “Accident. Brings up bad memories. So, if I’m a shrimp, then you’re a jelly donut.”

Ryan looked at her, looked down and muttered, “Damnit, I’m a donut,” enticing a laugh from Erin. Soon though, the bell rung, and Erin changed out of her large PE clothes, which were the smallest but still baggy on her, and headed out for French I, the first class she had with Faye.

Joe and Eileen took Spanish however, and Faye had two friends in this class, a red-head and a black haired girl, both completely different than Faye. The red-head kind of gossiped a bit way to much, and the black haired girl usually talked about boys, and Faye just laughed, and would send occasional glances at Erin.

Ein sighed, the desks in French were all separate, and she sat in the back alone, well, until she saw Faye get up. “Your alone in this class aren’t you?” she said in a soft voice, taking the empty desk next to Faye, ignoring the looks her two friends were giving her.

Erin nodded, and sadly admitted, “Unfortunately this is the class where most think I’m retarded or really young for being this short,” and gave out a sad laugh.

“I don’t think you are, I think its cute…” Faye said while smiling, and put her hand on Erin’s, causing the shorter girl to jump and sit up straight in her seat with a blush on her face and looked away.

“I…I want a cookie…” Erin muttered cutely, getting Faye to giggle at the shorter girl, and pulled back into the seat next to Erin as the bell rung for class to begin. The teacher, a middle-aged man who originated from France, or came out extremely bloody of his mother’s dear womb in France, smiled as he got up from his desk at the front of the room.

“Bonjour, class, I’m going to get to the point fast for today and let you kids plan out everything for the rest of the period. I’m assigning a two month project to build a 3-4 feet tall model of any attraction in France, and a 4 page essay on it, all presented in the language were learning…”

Erin couldn’t help but speak up and finish the French Teacher’s sentence saying, “…Japanese?” and obtaining a laugh from her classmates and the teacher himself, who sarcastically replied, “Ahh yes, I sometimes forget I’m teaching Japanese. It slips my mind, you know? Haha, anyways, I’d like everyone in the class to pair up and work hard, this will be half your grade,” he concluded and sat down, grading tests from the previous class.

Faye turned to Erin with a bright smile, and asked, “Do you want to be my partner?” despite the looks from her two friends.

Erin grinned, from ear to ear, and nodded her head furiously, “I’d love to!”

By now, her two friends got up and walked here, with a weird look on their faces. “Hey, isn’t this the girl that knocked you over?” the red-haired said harshly. The black-haired girl crossed her arms and studied the short girl whose feet were inches away from reaching the floor.

Faye smiled, and said, “Yeah, but she’s really cool. Anyways, Tina, Monica, this is Erin, Erin, this is Tina (the red-haired), and Monica (the black-haired girl),” Faye said with a smile. “They aren’t the people I transferred with, but they’re the people I met before you, and they were walking with my other friends…” Faye said.

Erin smiled, and looked at the two, who were glaring at her before walking away, and muttered, “I don’t think they like me.”

Faye giggled softly and said, “Its cause your close to Joe I think, and I think they have a crush on him…” Faye laughed at Erin who pretended she was vomiting. “Ew, Joe? He farts all the time! He sat on me and farted! He’s not a gentleman with me and Eileen unlike here,” Erin said jokingly, her face scrunched in disgust. Erin turned to Faye, with a serious face. “Do you like him?”

Faye smiled, and shook her head, and asked Erin for a piece of paper before muttering under her breath, “I said I liked your eyes better…”
