Chapter 6

At breakfast Roz is sitting with the rest of her friends.  Kailey heads over, but Roz looks pointedly away.  Kailey ends up sitting at another spot, confused and hurt by Roz’s over-exaggerated rejection.

Roz avoids Kailey most of the day until they catch up in the shower block.  Kailey has just finished and meets Roz heading in.  Roz automatically turns away.

“What is wrong with you?”  Kailey demands.

Roz scoffs.  “How can you even ask that question after what you did to me last night?”

“Me?” Says Kailey in disbelief.  “Hang on a minute, it wasn’t all my doing!”

“You took advantage of me when I was down.  It wasn’t like I wanted you to fuck me.”  Roz accuses.

Kailey shakes her head.  “Then why did you ask me-- no let me rephrase that, why did you force yourself upon me?”

“I did no such thing.”

“You're kidding… you don’t remember?  How much did you drink?  You jumped me.  You told me you were drunk and horny you said you wanted me.  I pushed you away- several times- but you just kept coming.

Roz doesn't want to listen or believe.  “I’m not like that.” She asserts.  “You practically raped me.”

“Raped?!” said Kailey in raised voice, “Did you find any marks on your body, by chance?”

Roz rolls her eyes.

“No?  I did.  Care to explain these?”  She drops her towel, exposing her naked body to Roz. Kailey breasts and neck are covered in bruises.

Roz swears.

“I suppose you think I did this to myself?”  Kailey suggested sarcastically.

“Probably your girlfriend Ang.”  Roz snaps without thinking, regretting the words as soon as they leave her lips.  Kailey's eyes flash and she spits at Roz's feet.

"Screw you, Roz.”  Kailey storms away, and the two don't see one another until they return to their cell for lockup.  Before either gets the chance to say anything, the guard that comes to lock their cell takes Roz away for a short time.  She returns to find Kailey reading her book on the small bed.  She looks sheepishly at Kailey.

“Why didn’t you tell me you contacted legal aid?” Roz asks softly.  Her question is met with silence.

Roz sits on her own bed and her head drops.  “I’m sorry, Kailey.  I was out of line.”

“You got that right.”  Kailey hisses, breaking her silence.  She faces Roz.  “I never forced myself on you.”  Her eyes start watering.

“I know.”  Roz admits quietly.  "I’m ashamed and I feel terrible.”

“Good.”

“The lawyer told me that my husband can’t stop my kids coming in, and arrangements will be made for my sister to bring them in.”

Kailey doesn't say anything at first, then closes her book and puts it away.  “Good for you.”  She rolls over away from Roz.

Kailey spends the next day in the library, reading.  She wants to get away from the overcrowding of everywhere else in the wing. She closes her eyes to savor the peace, and hears somebody come in with her and close the door.  She looks up to see who it is and, utterly unimpressed with her visitor, snaps her book shut and prepares to leave.

“Kailey, please stop this.  I can’t stand you ignoring me.”  Roz pleads.  “I don’t know how many times I can say I'm sorry.  I can’t stand seeing the pain in your eyes, I won't stand it.  If you can't talk to me, I’m going to ask the chief warden to move me into another cell.”

Kailey remains silent until Roz turns away, then she can't keep it up.

“No, I don’t want that.”  She says hoarsely.

Roz faces her and watches in surprise as tears start to fall. She instantly moves to Kailey's side, but the younger girl backs away.

“No, I don't want your pity either.”

Roz ignores her and wraps her arms around her.  “If I want to hug you I will.”  She says firmly.

Kailey collapses crying in her arms.  “You should know I'd never hurt you, I love you too much.”

Roz kisses her head.  “I know, I’m an idiot.”

“Yeah, you are.” Kailey wipes her face, and Roz laughs.

The next day dawns even brighter when they learn that they will be getting visitors the next day, Roz's children are already able to make it.  The guard stands before the happy pair.  “I'm glad I’ve made your day, but now I h ave to ask you to make mine.  I need a urine sample.”

“What, why?”  Roz asks.

“Random drug testing.”

“I want to see my kids, can't this wait?”

Kailey thinks Roz sounds odd.  “C'mon, Roz, it’s nothing.  Just peeing in a jar.”

“Well maybe you’re used to it, but not me.”  Roz says absently, then feels bad at the hurt expression on Kailey’s face.

“Wait, no, I just meant that... sorry, Kailey.”

The guard waits until they're quiet again.  “If you want to see your kids, pee.”

They comply and the guard walks away with the samples.

Roz paces the floor of their cell. Kailey is laying with her eyes closed on the bed, and opens them to watch her.

“Bit excited.”  She observes.

Roz shrugs.  “Bit apprehensive, I guess.  It's been nearly 12 months.  I don’t know what to say.”

Kailey opens her sheet and motions Roz in.  “They're your kids.  Find out how they are, how school is, whether Zac still playing soccer and Amber is still in band.”

“You really listened when I talked about my family.”  Roz notes.

“Yeah.  It sounds like a lovely family to be a part of.  You have a lot to be proud of.” Kailey says admiringly.

“You know, I never really asked about your family.”

Kailey wraps her arms around Roz and nuzzles her neck from behind.  “Nothing to tell.  My mum gave me up when I was born, and I ended up in one foster home after another.  I had one good place for a while when I was thirteen, with a nice mother and father, but then she fell pregnant and... well, I kinda got moved on.”

Roz rolls to face Kailey.  “All this time I’ve been going on about my family… why didn’t you say anything?“  She says sadly.

“Because listening to you talk about your family made me kinda feel like I was a part of it.”

Roz strokes Kailey's face and presss their lips together.  Kailey pulls away.  “I think you should get some rest, big day tomorrow.”

“Oh, would you get off that already.”  Jokes Roz.

“Hey, Roz?  Something’s bothering me.  You really acted weird around that guard about giving him a sample.  You worried about anything?”

Roz looked at Kailey “Not really.  Well, being drunk.”

Kailey laughs.  “That would be long out of your system, trust me.  I would have thought you'd  know that much.  Is that what you're really concerned about?”

Roz bites her lip, then opens her mouth, but Kailey kisses her first.  “I promise you they won't find anything in my pee.  I’m as clean as a whistle.”  Roz looks relieved, and they snuggle down for the night.
